Environment protection by utilization of wastes

Collection containers for granulates and crops are nothing new to us. These high and usually round silos are made of steel, masonry and steel concrete. Even though we primarily have to do with crop silos, we would like to introduce silos for the wood-processing industry. Dust, chippings and other wastes from the production of wooden building elements or furniture are transported to the silos. The intention is to take advantage of the primary energy left in these wastes. Therefore the production facilities in this industry can be seen as self-sufficient in regards to power and can additionally provide energy in form of heat and electricity for the public power network.

Finished mounting of a 30m high silo for wood shavings from steel-concrete pre-fabricated parts with integrated explosion-openings, safety ladders and eventual exhaust connection.

The engineering of silos is very specialized

Usually a silo includes a boiler house, filter facilities for the addition of chippings and the purification of smoke, as well as transport systems, grinders and more. The entire facility is usually constructed on a basis of the so-called “Blmsch-Antrag” (Bauantrag für Gebäude und technische Einrichtungen nach dem Bundes-Immissionsschutzgesetz). The silo itself has to meet certain technical planning requirements, the air is saturated with fine dust which makes it easily flammable and explosive. Therefore, it takes special consideration and precautions, like the installation of Berstfolien that can be life-savers if worst comes to worst. (see picture to the right). Austragungssysteme, fire-fighting equipment, filling-level meter – just to mention a few more installations. In regards to structural planning, these buildings have to be designed for an increased internal pressure, which is not the case in old brick-built facilities. IFB has been working on remodelling-concepts for over 20 years.
